An Idea To Move You

When I was a 22 year old kid, a radio program director/boss told me, "We spend our entire lives in this business learning to be ourselves behind the mic."

The same is true for acting.

Our job is connection, and we can only do that when we're vulnerable enough to lay ourselves bare, warts and all. To be purely human.

A Thought to Touch You*

"I am worth putting my stamp on it to be distinctive, just like any other actor when they’re doing an on-camera role, to say, ‘You know what? This is how I roll, this is how I do that part.’ And to be confident enough to leave something out there that is you."

A Quote to Inspire You

Dancer and choreographer Martha Graham reminds us that our uniqueness itself is art...

“Because there is only one of you in all of time, this expression is unique.”

*This week's Thought...

Is from the great Thom Pinto in Why Your Narration Sounds Good But Falls Flat. Documentary narration takes more than a great voice. Thom joins me to explore the voiceover techniques that turn a polished read into compelling storytelling, and the habits that can hold your performance back.

With more than 30 years of documentary and docuseries narration experience, Thom shares how he approaches script analysis, emotional range, visualization, and connecting with an audience. His credits include the History Channel, Smithsonian, BBC, and the Weather Channel.

We get into why your default narrator voice can work against you, how to make familiar words sound like a fresh discovery, and what it takes to bring your own perspective to an audition. Because sounding good and making someone care are two very different skills.

Thom also shares the thinking behind his course, Primetime Narration: Mastering Documentary Storytelling, and the lessons he wants to pass on to the next generation of narrators.
